My Mother's (Martha Wall) Dill Pickles

4 qts water
1 qt vinegar
1 cup salt
cucumbers
dill
spices
garlic
1 tsp alum for each jar
Directions
Bring to a boil 4 qts. water, 1 qt. vinegar, and 1 cup salt. Fill quarts with cucumbers, dill, spices, and garlic. Put 1 tsp. alum in each jar. Pour hot mixture to fill jar. Seal and let set several weeks.
