Burnt Sugar Cake

1/2 c sugar
1/2 c boiling water
2 1/4 cups cake flour
1 cup sugar
3 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1/2 cup shortening
2/3 cup cooled caramel water
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
Directions
Caramelize 1/2 cup sugar: Melt sugar in a heavy skillet over low heat until clear and medium brown. Shake pan to keep from burning. Remove from heat and add 1/2 cup boiling water. Stir over low heat until lumps are dissolved. Measure this and add water to make 1 cup liquid.
Sift cake flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt together in a bowl. Add shortening and 2/3 c caramel water and beat 2 minutes. Add eggs and vanilla. Beat 2 more minutes.
Pour into prepared pans. Bake at 350 for 30 - 35 minutes. Frost with Burnt Sugar Icing.
Notes
I don't recall making this very often, but it is not heard of much these days. It's moist and delicious. A little different flavor.
