1 (750-mL.) bottle red wine
1 orange, sliced into rounds, plus more for serving
6 whole cloves
3 (3") cinnamon sticks, plus more for serving
3 star anise pods
1/2 c. brandy
1/4 c. honey
Directions
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, bring wine, oranges, cloves, cinnamon, star anise, brandy, and honey to a simmer (do not boil). Reduce heat to medium-low and cook, stirring occasionally, until fragrant and slightly reduced, about 10 minutes.
Divide mulled wine among cups or mugs. Garnish with more orange slices and cinnamon sticks.
Notes
What is the best wine for mulled wine? Personally, I like to use dry wines like Merlot, Malbec, or Cabernet Sauvignon. These prevent the mulled wine from being too sweet and balance out all the spices. There's no need to splurge on an expensive bottle—just choose a wine you enjoy or check out our article on the major types of red wine to get a sense of what you might like.
Mulled wine is best enjoyed day of, but if you have any left over let it cool completely before transferring to an airtight container and storing in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Reheat on the stovetop when ready to enjoy.
