CRUST

1 c. crushed chocolate wafers

4 Tbsp. melted butter

2 Tbsp. brown sugár

FILLING

2 c. half 'n half

4 eggs, separated

2 Tbsp. cornstarch

1 c. sugar

2 squares unsweetened chocolate, melted

dash of salt

1 tsp. vanilla

1 Tbsp. gelatin

1 Tbsp. cold water

4 Tbsp. rum (opt.)

1/4 tsp. cream of tartar

For crust, combine chocolate wafers, butter, and brown sugar. Press into greased 9 or 10 inch pie plate.

Scald half 'n half and very slowly, then add beaten egg yolks.

Combine cornstarch with ½ c. sugar and add to cream mix. Cook in double boiler, stirring until thick. Add salt. Remove from heat.

Pour 1 c. of custard mix in bowl and add melted chocolate and vanilla. Spread over crust.

Dissolve gelatin in water and add to remaining hot custard. Add rum.

Beat egg whites until stiff.

Fold into custard mix and pour into pie shell.

If desired, top with whipped cream and/or shaved chocolate.
