Caramel Brownies

1 pkg german chocolate cake mix

14 oz package caramel candy (I can only find 10oz packages and that has been adequate)

2/3 cup evaporated milk (divided 1/3 and 1/3)

3/4 cup melted margarine

1 cup chocolate chips

1 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Preheat oven to 350

Grease and flour 9x13 pan

Combine caramels and 1/3 cup evap milk and cook over low heat, stirring almost constantly until caramels are melted. Keep warm while preparing cake mix.

Mix cake mix, melted maragarine, remaining 1/3 cup evap milk and (optional) nuts; stir until well mixed.

Press 1/2 (~ 2 cups) of cake mixture into pan.

Bake at 350 for 6 minutes

Spread chocolate chips over crust; spread caramel mixture over chips

Drop the remaining cake batter in small teaspoonfuls over caramel and chips; spread gently over surface.

Bake 20-25 minutes until top is dry, brownies shrink a bit from sides, and toothpick inserted into cake mix comes out clean.

Cool completely and cut into squares.
