FILLING

1 pound chopped dates

1/2 cup water

1/2 cup sugar

1 cup chopped pecans (add when cool)

DOUGH

1/2 cup sugar

1/2 cup butter

1/2 cup brown sugar

1 egg

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

1-3/4 cups flour

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

Cook filling mixture

Add water to make spreadable

For dough, cream butter and sugars

Add egg and vanilla; mix

Stir in dry ingredients and blend

Divide dough in half and roll out

Spread 1/2 of dates on each

Roll and wrap in foil or waxed paper

Chill; Cut 1/4" slices

Bake at 400 for 8-10 minutes
