Ma Lowe’s Chicken and Dumplings

Chicken
Swanson Chicken Broth (if needed)
Flour
Crisco
Buttermilk
Tony’s seasoning packet
Salt, pepper, butter to taste

It’s best to cook a whole chicken and use the broth from it. Then debone the chicken and add to dumplings. I do use Swanson chicken broth sometime (64 oz) or more and cooked chicken breasts. Add one can of cream of chicken soup. Add salt, pepper, Tony’s seasoning. Butter to taste. Heat the broth to a rolling boil.
Dumpling dough
1 heaping cup of plain flour
1 heaping cup of self-rising flour
1/2 tsp. Salt
1/4 cup Crisco
1 heaping cup of whole buttermilk
Sift dry ingredients together. Add Crisco to flour until a crumbly mixture. Add buttermilk and make a stiff dough. Take 1/2 of dough and place on a floured surface (flour with plain flour). Knead until very stiff dough. Roll out very thin with rolling pin. The thinner you can roll it the better it is. Cut into strips and drop into boiling broth. Repeat with the other half of dough.
If you want to make a chicken pie. Use 1/2 of dough to make dumplings with broth. Add chicken and put into a 9 x13 pan. Cut second half of dough into strips and place on top of dumplings. Dot with butter. Bake at 400 degrees until brown.
