Farmhouse Dumpling Squares with Brown Gravy

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp salt
2 tbsp butter (melted)
¾ cup milk (or water)
brown gravy
3 tbsp butter (or drippings)
3 tbsp flour
2½ cups beef broth (or vegetable broth)
black pepper, to taste
salt, to taste
Directions
make the dumpling dough
In a bowl, mix flour and salt. Stir in melted butter and milk until a soft dough forms.
roll & cut
Roll dough out on a floured surface to about ¼-inch thickness.
Cut into rustic squares with a knife or pizza cutter.
cook the dumplings
Bring a pot of lightly salted water or broth to a gentle boil.
Drop in dumpling squares and cook 10–12 minutes until tender. Drain.
make the brown gravy
In a skillet, melt butter. Whisk in flour and cook 1 minute.
Slowly whisk in broth, stirring until thick and smooth. Season with pepper and salt.
serve farmhouse-style
Place dumpling squares on plates and spoon hot brown gravy generously over the top.
