Great Grandma Pionek’s Sugar Cookies




total time


1 cup Granulated Sugar

1 cup unsalted butter (softened)

3/4 cup Butter milk or Half & Half

2 Large eggs

2 tsp Vanilla extract

1/2 tsp Baking soda

2 tsp Baking powder

1/4 Salt

3 1/4 cup All-purpose Flour


Preheat the oven to 350F

1) In a bowl mix together Flour, baking soda, baking powder,salt. Set aside

2) In mixer add sugar and butter until creamy. Then add eggs, vanilla, and butter milk.

3) Slowly add the dry mix to the mixer.

4) Then refrigerate the dough for about 1/2 an hour to 45 minutes.

5) Flour work area well. The dough works best when stiff. Roll out to thickness of your preference.

If the dough starts to get sticky either use more flour while rolling or refrigerate again.

6) Then cut out your cookies with cookie cutters. Keep re rolling extra dough to cut more cookies.

7) Place on cookie sheets and bake for 8 to 10 min. Then place on cooling rack.


1) Original recipe called for 1/2 cup sour milk. To make sour milk add 1 tbsp vinegar to milk, then stir in the 1/2 tsp baking the milk foams or thickens. BUT then do not use the other 1/2 tsp of baking soda, as called for.

2) This recipe can not be doubled. They will not turn out. Each batch has to be mixed separately.
