1 tablespoon butter (or olive oil)
1/2 large yellow onion (finely chopped)
1/2 cup green bell pepper (finely diced)
4 cloves garlic (minced)
1 pound lean ground beef (85%-90% lean)
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
3/4 cup ketchup
2/3 cup water
1 tablespoon brown sugar (adjust to your taste)
2 tsp yellow mustard
1/2 tsp chili powder (or more to taste)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
4 hamburger buns (toasted if desired)
Directions
In a large skillet over medium-high heat, melt the butter (or heat the olive oil). Add the finely chopped onion and sauté for 2-3 minutes, until it starts to soften.
Add the finely diced green bell pepper and cook for another 2 minutes, until softened.
Stir in the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds, until fragrant.
Add the ground beef to the skillet. Break it apart with a spatula and cook for about 5 minutes, or until it's no longer pink.
Stir in the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, water, brown sugar, mustard, chili powder, salt, and pepper.
Reduce the heat to medium and let the mixture simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. This will allow the sauce to thicken and the flavors to meld together.
Once the sauce has thickened to your liking, remove it from the heat.
Serve the sloppy joe mixture on toasted hamburger buns.
