Bryan's Broccoli & Onions

2 tablespoons olive oil
½ medium yellow or red onion, sliced from blossom to root end
1 tablespoon minced garlic
12 ounces broccoli florets (about 6 cups)
2 tablespoons Marsala
1 teaspoon grated lemon zest
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
½ cup water
Directions
1. In a large skillet with a lid, heat the oil over medium heat until shimmering. Add the onion and garlic and cook until soft and start- ing to brown, 10 to 12 minutes.
2. Add the broccoli florets and Marsala and toss to coat. Increase the heat to medium-high and cook, stirring, until crisp-tender, about 10 minutes.
3. Add the lemon zest and salt and pepper to taste. Add the water, cover, and steam until tender, 7 to 10 minutes. Serve hot.
