We make it every Christmas, and it’s one of our favorite traditions. This year I doubled the recipe and built a four-layer lasagna in a deep dish, and it might be my favorite one yet.

I know lasagna opinions run deep, so let’s hear it.

World’s Best Lasagna (Double Batch)

Meat Sauce

2 lbs sweet Italian sausage

2 lbs lean ground beef

1C diced onion

4 cloves garlic, minced

2 cans (28 oz each) crushed tomatoes

4 cans (6 oz each) tomato paste

4 cans (6.5 oz each) tomato sauce

1 cup water

4 tbsp white sugar

1/4C fresh parsley, chopped

3t dried basil

1T Italian seasoning

1t fennel seeds

salt

black pepper

Cook sausage, ground beef, onion, and garlic until browned. Drain excess fat.

Stir in tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, water, sugar, and seasonings.

Simmer on low for at least 1½ hours, stirring occasionally.

Cheese Mixture

32 oz ricotta cheese

2 eggs

1/4C fresh parsley, chopped

Instruções

Mix everything together until smooth.

Lasagna Assembly

24 lasagna noodles, I used oven ready

24 slices mozzarella cheese

Extra grated Parmesan for topping

Layer sauce, noodles, ricotta mixture, mozzarella, sauce, parmesan and repeat.

I went four full layers in a deep lasagna dish.

Cover with foil and bake at 375°F for 30 minutes.

Uncover and bake another 30 minutes until bubbly and golden.

Rest for 15-30 minutes before slicing.
