Ingredients:
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
3 tablespoons cornstarch
1/8 teaspoon salt
2 3/4 cups whole milk (or 2%)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
Optional: 1/2 cup chopped chocolate or chocolate chips (for extra richness)

1. Mix dry ingredients: In a medium saucepan (off heat), whisk together the sugar, cocoa powder, cornstarch, and salt.
2. Add milk slowly: Gradually whisk in the milk to avoid lumps.
3. Cook: Place the saucepan over medium heat. Stir constantly with a whisk or silicone spatula until the mixture thickens and starts to bubble — about 5–10 minutes. Once it starts bubbling, cook for 1–2 more minutes, stirring constantly.
4. Add flavor: Remove from heat. Stir in the butter, vanilla, and optional chopped chocolate or chips until fully melted and smooth.
5. Serve: Pour into bowls or jars. Let cool slightly, then refrigerate if you prefer it chilled and thickened more.
