1. Wash well 1/2 cup pink masoor daal and 1/2 cup rice and set aside.

2. Heat about 1/4 cup oil and add 1 tsp zeera seeds and 1/2 tsp whole black pepper (2 green cardamom optional)

3. ⁠When zeera is brown add 1/3 cup fried onions - stir for 1/2 minute and add 1.5 tsp garlic ginger paste.

4. ⁠Fry everything for a minute and add the washed rice and lentils and 1/2 tsp turmeric. Stir for a minute and add 2.5 cups of water.

5. ⁠When the water comes to a boil add 1 tsp salt and let it simmer for 5 minutes.

6. ⁠Turn the heat to the lowest setting, cover the pot and leave for 20 minutes.

7. ⁠You can add a tsp of butter in the end for extra flavor.

If you want to cook in the pressure cooker then use 2 cups water and turn off the stove after 5 whistles. Don’t open the pressure cooker until the pressure has released on its own (approximately 20 minutes).
