Ingrédients

  • 3 bottles of red wine

  • 1 bottle of white wine

  • (optional) 2 cups of spiced rum

  • 3 oranges

  • 2 apples

  • 4 cinnamon sticks

  • 12 cloves

  • 6 star anise

  • 2 cups brown sugar

Instructions

Half 2 out of these oranges and juice them into a deep pot.

Cut the remaining orange into circles and add it to the pan.

Slice and core apples into bite-sized pieces and add them as well.

Add a cup of water.

Add 1 cup of brown sugar and start to simmer on low until all of it dissolves in the juice.

Add all of the spices and all of the wine.

Increase the fire to warm up the pot, but as soon as it begins to simmer, lower it to the lowest setting. NEVER LET IT BOIL.

Simmer for 15 minutes. The longer it sits - the better it gets.

Add more sugar to taste.

Tip: use a Dutch oven with a thicker iron bottom to keep it warm longer even if the fire is off.

Optional: add a tablespoon or two of spiced rum into each cup before adding the mulled wine for some extra kick.
